Side Piece is an important and generative part of my studio practise / an ongoing project where I create small quick sculptures that are often funny little speedy gestures. They are a means to work out material questions, spur of the moment ideas, surface problems, and the like. Sometimes they take over my thinking and spawn a whole body of work. Often pieces are left unfinished, and lay abandoned on the many surfaces in my studio. Often I make multiples with variation to try to understand their potential through difference and give space for the ideas each one generates. I think of them as drawings, experiments, gifts, and potential.
