Series: ‘Without An Object’

In conjunction with my 3-dimensional work, I have been working on a long-term series of drawings which engage similar meticulous and labor-intensive accumulative aspects. In place of the sculptures’ physical material the drawings’ object of repetition is a symbol devoid or drained of significance, meaning and referent. The drawings consist of a repeated out-of-service telephone number, hand written at an almost microscopic scale. Both the familiarity of the handwritten mark and the subtext of an out-of-service number imply a sense of nostalgia, but the excessive repetition on a grandiose scale aims to de-signify the meaning of the mark. The drawings feel vaguely familiar yet totally foreign, in that they grasp toward meaning for their meaningless symbol through an essentially self-negating process. Language, technology and culture are implicated by this mass of meaningless symbols that threaten the fragile state of identity and the identity of words.

This work was featured in the Netflix Series “Russian Doll”, a funny Reddit link
